History
Attorney Paul P Harris initiated the first Rotary Club on 23rd February, 1905. He held the first meeting along with his three friends, Sylvester Schiele, Gustave E Loehr, and Hiram E Shore. The club members rotated the club meetings in each member’s office each week that eventually leads them to choose the name of the club as Rotary.
In 1922 the club name was changed to Rotary International as the clubs had been initiated in six continents by this time. 200 Clubs with more than 20,000 members had been organized by 1925.
Facts and Chronology:
The first meeting was held by Attorney Paul Harris along
with his three friends on 23 February, 1905 in Chicago.
During the First World War the number of Rotary Clubs in
Britain increased to 22. The first Rotary Club in India was
initiated in 1920.
The phenomenon of the Second World War forced Rotarian Clubs to experience break up. Rotary International encounters a number of disband from 1947 to 1989 during the Communist Regime in Eastern Europe.
In the Post War Era Rotarians feel the urge to promote the Educational and Cultural exchanges internationally that eventually encourages the founding of UNESCO
With a humanitarian view to immunize all of the world’s children against polio Rotary International initiated it’s Polio Plus Programme in 1985.
Rotary begins opening clubs in the former Communist countries and first Rotary Club was organized in Russia in 1990.
Rotary International grew into 32,000 clubs with 1.2 million members among 200 countries by 2006 that makes it the second largest service club in the world.
